Grateful Dead drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart will kickstart the band’s 50th anniversary celebrations by performing together for the first time in three years at the Gathering of the Vibes festival in Connecticut this summer.

The two rock icons will team up with Disco Biscuits for a headlining slot at the event, three years after they last performed at the festival as the Rhythm Devils.

Kreutzmann tells Rolling Stone magazine, “It’s going to get weird. It’s going to get far out. And it’s going to be something completely different – exactly what all involved parties are known for.”

Hart adds, “Any day playing drums with Bill is a very good day. The Disco Biscuits seem to prefer trance/space, moment music. Bill and I are quite familiar with the genre. Let the fun begin!”

The Gathering of the Vibes launched in 1996, the year after Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia’s sudden death and the band’s break-up.

Other acts billed to perform this year include John Fogerty, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Ziggy Marley and White Denim.

Gathering of the Vibes will run from July 31-Aug. 3 at Seaside Park in Bridgeport, Conn.
